SLAM
The Motion Picture Soundtrack
Immortal Entertainment and Epic Records present music from the award-winning major motion picture Slam.
By old school definition, rap is rhythm and poetry. This is no more evident than when you pass the street corner of a major city and hear kids free-flowing in a cipher, usually the accompaniment of a beat-box--the eccentric and magical practice of making music with your mouth. Instances like these are a mere hop, skip and jump away from the art that is spoken word: modern-day performances by poets who, like the practitioners of hip-hop, require only the barest essentials to make their voices heard in a unique way.
Soon to be heard coast to coast is the Slam soundtrack, which gathers no less than hip-hop's reigning giants for a rock-solid collection of shining songs interspersed with memorable, highly charged spoken-word excerpts lifted directly from the gritty behind-bars film.
The Music
As for the next big street anthem, look no farther than the eagerly anticipated Black Rob's mesmerizing "I DARE YOU," produced by up-'n'-coming Bad Boy producer Younglord. The track expertly utilizes Love Unlimited's "Under The Influence Of Love" to create a spellbinding showdown that finds this Uptown emcee, previously heard on the debuts of both Puff Daddy and Mase, taking all comers with his ferocious skills. The allure of "I Dare You" is simple: a bad-ass rapper talking shit, but more importantly, backing it up. Another banging Bad Boy creation.
Extending his vise grip on the world of popular music, Bronx-bred Puerto Rican titan Big Pun teams up with upstart r&b crooners Next on the flashy "SEX, MONEY & DRUGS," a ghetto serenade of the all-too-powerful allure of the fast life. Pun sprinkles the bubbly track with the raunchy musings and breathtaking flow that have made him one of the fastest-rising rap superstars in recent memory. Not to be out-done, the Next trio embellish the proceeding with milky vocals that are sure to make the ladies woozy with delight.
KRS-One saddles up with spoken word artist and actor Saul Williams on the eclectic "OCEAN WITHIN," a forerunner in the field of hip-hop and performance-art collabos. Backed by a minimalist track, the poets go for theirs, breaking down the complexities of life as only then can. As KRS has promised in the past, he takes you to a higher level--this time bringing Williams, who rides shotgun on their groundbreaking journey.
A unique talent for dabbling in mainstream mega-stardom while always keeping a foot firmly entrenched in the muddy waters of the under-ground: That's Wu-Tang Clan's Ol' Dirty Bastard (also known as ODB, Ason, Dirt McGurt, Osirus and Big Baby Jesus), who here takes time from bum-rushing stages to lend his wildman demeanor to the party starter, "The Park." ODB teams with the personable, multi-platinum veteran from Cali known as Coolio, and the demented duo go for broke over a reworking of the classic old-school staple, "Rock Creek Park," by The Blackbyrds. Expect everything but the kitchen sink as Ol' Dirty freaks out, giving a shout-out to jails while Coolio conjures images of gang meetings from a whole 'nother movie, The Warriors.
"THUG POETRY" is a pure adrenaline rush from the What! What! Man, Lefrak, Queens' Noreaga, who along with his thugged-out partners in rhyme, Brown & Maze, bring the house down with their relentless rap-ping steez. Painting vivid pictures of the wrong side of the law, Nore and his cohorts represent the perils of the crime lifestyle to the fullest effect.
Equally effective is the Goodie Mob & Esthero love-in, "COUNTRY LIVIN' (Remix)," a special Southern blend of hip-hop and soul from Atlanta's finest. Respected for honest storytelling and originality, Goodie Mob spin yet another tantalizing tale of trying to live straight in a crooked world. The sensuous voice of Esthero, the female half of the trip-pop duo of the same name, lifts this selection to the realm of understated magnificence.
Yet another offering from the Wu is the spirited "I CAN SEE," a slightly different slice of Clan creation from female singer Tekitha and killer bee Cappadonna. Thanks to her haunting vocals and his ab-stract stylings, the song is a surreal moment courtesy of hip-hop's most intriguing camp.
Reunited and reinvigorated, Brand Nubian drop the apocalyptic "TIME IS RUNNING OUT." The bomb track is a call for brotherhood in these last decrepit days, and finds Grand Puba, Sadat X and Lord Jamar in top form as we head for the next millennium. Certain to satiate the hardcore is some rare new flavor from the Official Queensbridge Murderers, Mobb Deep, who deliver the sparse yet deadly "FEEL MY GAT BLOW."
Q-Tip from A Tribe Called Quest ("HEY") and Busta Rhymes' Flipmode Squad ("TAKE A WALK IN MY SHOES") round off a star-studded affair. Thought-provoking lyrics and spacey, out-of-this world production make the Slam soundtrack bang harder than Shaquille on an alley-oop dunk or the judge's gavel on a 25-to-life sentence.
The Movie
Mixing together fiction with reality in an innovative filmmaking style that threatens to ignite at the blink of an eye, Slam explores the need for creativity even in the face of long-term incarceration.
Written and directed by Marc Levin, and starring Raymond Joshua, Sonja Sohn and hip-hop scribe Bonz Malone, this compelling tale of a poet/rap artist who struggles to maintain his creative drive in the belly of the beast has garnered numerous critical kudos and won both the 1998 Grand Jury Prize at Sundance Film Festival and the Audience Award at the Cannes Film Festival.
Marc Levin, who also directed the popular HBO documentary Gang War: Bangin' In Little Rock (1993), works from a stirring screenplay co-written with Bonz Malone, Sonja Sohn, Richard Stratton and Saul Williams.
