Crown Archetype, an imprint of Penguin Random House’s Crown Publishing Group, announced today that it will publish a new book by music producer and social media star DJ Khaled. Scheduled for release on November 22, 2016, THE KEYS will be released simultaneously in the United States and Canada, in print and digital formats. Crown Archetype Vice President and Editorial Director, Tricia Boczkowski, made the announcement today. Amanda Patten, Senior Editor, acquired world, electronic book, and first-serial rights from Marc Gerald at United Talent Agency and will edit the book. Khaled’s collaborator on the book will be Mary H. K. Choi.

A major force in the music industry—mogul, executive, megaproducer, and recording artist—Khaled has amassed millions of followers devoted to his inspirational, motivational, and often whimsical quotes on achieving success in life. In his ten-second snap chat self help sermons, he refers to his pieces of uniquely phrased wisdom as “keys,” using the key emoji to signify their importance.

Written in the upbeat and positive tone for which he is known, THE KEYS will offer Khaled’s philosophy for success, featuring stories from his own life as he reveals all of the major keys. New York, NY, September 26, 2016 – On National Voter Registration Day, MTV’s classic franchise “TRL” will return for one day only as “Total Registration Live,” an empowering live special that will rally Millennials to register to vote. The one-hour live show will broadcast from the home of TRL on Tuesday, September 27 at 6:00 p.m. ET/PT on MTV and simulcast on MTV.com, the MTV App, MTV’s Facebook and YouTube pages, and ElectThis.com.

The special will include Grammy-nominated R&B superstar and Respect My Vote! Ambassador, Ty Dolla $ign performing “Campaign,” “No Justice” and “Zaddy” from his brand new project “CAMPAIGN,” appearances by model and Rock The Vote spokesperson Kendall Jenner, Director, Producer and Writer Joss Whedon, Fifth Harmony’s Camila Cabello, rapper Vic Mensa, actress Natalia Dyer, actor and singer Mack Wilds and more, along with MTV’s Nessa who will host. Also on-hand will be MTV News’ Senior Political Correspondent Ana Marie Cox and Senior National Correspondent Jamil Smith.

“Total Registration Live” comes at a time when the Millennial vote will be a key deciding factor in the outcome of the 2016 election. Original research from MTV Insights estimates that if no Millennials vote, Donald Trump will win with 44 percent of the vote vs. 41 percent for Hillary Clinton. If all Millennials vote, Clinton wins 44 percent to Trump’s 39 percent. And if only half of Millennials vote, the race will remain too close to call (43 percent Clinton vs. 41 percent Trump).*

Guests will speak out on the issues at the center of the 2016 election and empower viewers to register to vote via MTV’s long-standing partner Rock The Vote at ElectThis.com, or by texting VOTEMTV to 384387 via a partnership with HelloVote, the first chatbot that allows voters to register over text message or Facebook Messenger in under a minute. In place of the classic “TRL” Top Ten Music Video Countdown, powerful profiles will spotlight what is at stake in the upcoming election through the eyes of three Millennials taking individual action to change their communities, including 24-year old rape survivor and legislative advocate Amanda Nguyen, Yale freshman and undocumented immigrant Larissa Martinez and 22-year old founder of the Georgia Muslim Voter Project Aisha Yaqoob.

MTV’s “Total Registration Live” joins more than 4,000 organizations on National Voter Registration Day, the largest one-day effort to register voters in the US.

The day before “Total Registration Live,” MTV News’ political powerhouse team of Ana Marie Cox and Jamil Smith will be on-the-ground at Hofstra University in the lead-up and immediately following the first 2016 presidential debate. Coverage will range from on-air hits on MTV and multiple Facebook Lives to ongoing editorial and social coverage.

In addition, MTV’s “Elect This,” in collaboration with Viacom NEXT, will debut the “Open Your Eyes” virtual reality art show at Hofstra University, which will be open to debate attendees and Hofstra students. Additional locations will be announced at a later date.

“Open Your Eyes” features 3D immersive visualizations of important issues ranging from gun violence and rape culture to climate change, immigration and more, created by young people and featured artists Dave Persue, Illma Gore, Hayden Zezula, Fabiola Lara, Ada Rajkovic, Shaun O’Connor, Sam Stewart, Grace Miceli, Renda Writer, JCorp, Jon Santos For Freedoms, SacSix, Wane, and ThankYouX. The “Elect This” hub at Art.electthis.com will host the art, viewable in 3D and virtual reality via Sketchfab; interviews with the artists; and key call-to-action for each work of art created in partnership with the artists themselves. The site will also house the “Elect This Generation,” a meme generator that allows users to combine art they create along with a statement about the issue it represents. Art and artist interviews will also be shared across MTV’s social platforms including Instagram, Snapchat and Facebook Live.

Select attendees at “Open Your Eyes” events will receive a viewer so they can view the art in virtual reality at home, in partnership with Sketchfab, and will have the opportunity to take the art home as a limited-edition lenticular print, in partnership with Gifpop.

The group features two brothers, two cousins, and one really good friend, and they’ve quickly become one of Australia’s latest breakout talents. Travis Scott claims his first No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 chart, as his new effort, Birds in the Trap Sing McKnight, debuts straight in at No. 1. The set, which was released on Sept. 2 through Grand Hustle/Epic Records, earned 88,000 equivalent album units in the week ending Sept. 8, according to Nielsen Music. Of that sum, 53,000 were in traditional album sales.

The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The new Sept. 24-dated chart (where Scott bows at No. 1) will be posted in full to Billboard’s websites on Tuesday, Sept. 13.

Birds in the Trap Sing McKnight is exclusively available through the Apple Music streaming service, and the iTunes Store for purchase. It’s the fifth album to hit No. 1 in 2016 initially as an Apple and iTunes exclusive, following Frank Ocean’s Blonde, DJ Khaled’s Major Key, Drake’s Views and Future’s Evol. (Scott, Khaled and Future also share the same label: Epic Records.)

The songs on Birds in the Trap Sing McKnight generated 50.2 million streams during its first tracking week, equating to 33,000 SEA units. The remainder of the album’s total units for the week were generated by track equivalent albums (TEA) — just 2,000 units. The TEA number is low because only one of the album’s songs is available or purchase a la carte from the album.

Scott’s new album follows his debut effort, Rodeo, which peaked at No. 3 on the tally in 2015. Rodeo launched with 85,000 units (70,000 in pure album sales).

Platinum-selling Atlanta rapper Future today announced that he will perform at the 2016 “MTV Video Music Awards.” The performance will mark Future’s first appearance on the VMA stage. The 2016 VMAs will air LIVE from New York’s iconic Madison Square Garden for the first time ever on Sunday, August 28 at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT.

Epic Records Whips Up Hit Album Out of Thin Air (and Online Streams)

You technically can’t buy the digital compilation album from Epic Records featuring hits by French Montana and DJ Khaled that has been a steady presence on the Billboard chart this summer. In fact, the album has sold a total of zero copies since its quiet release seven weeks ago.

Yet thanks to an updated formula for determining positions on the Billboard 200 that accounts for online activity, as well as some savvy opportunism from the label, the album, “Epic AF,” has become a disruptive presence on the charts, landing in the Top 10 four times by exploiting — or mastering — the new system.

It works like this: Since late 2014, Billboard has counted 1,500 streams or 10 paid downloads of a song as the equivalent of one album sold. But if a hit single comes from an album that is unreleased, the millions of plays it tallies on services like Spotify, Tidal and Apple Music go nowhere.

Epic has collected its album-less artists’ most popular summer songs across streaming services — “Lockjaw” by French Montana and Kodak Black, “Don’t Mind” by Kent Jones, “Pick Up the Phone” by Travis Scott and Young Thug — into one digital playlist, giving it a hip title and some generic cover art. In 2016, that’s enough to call it an album.

Now, when Billboard counts the weekly plays for “Don’t Mind,” which has 139 million Spotify streams to date, they are attached to the album, catapulting the digital compilation over traditional albums from artists on competing major labels. Chart position equals bragging rights — and its own form of marketing via brand visibility.

Dave Bakula, a senior analyst for Nielsen Music, which supplies the data Billboard uses for its charts, said that some could see the tactic as “trying to manipulate the charts.” But “if they’re living within the rules, good for them in being creative and having enough of a stable of big-name artists and big songs,” he said.

“It feels a little bit like a ‘Now’ record for streaming services,” he added, referring to the “Now That’s What I Call Music!” CDs, which peaked in the early 2000s.

Billboard declined to comment on Epic’s methods. But this week, the chart company opted to change its rules slightly so that paid downloads of singles included on this album do not count toward its chart position but streaming numbers do.

Still, the system is flexible.

The album which has added tracks since its initial release, includes current hits from DJ Khaled (“For Free,” “I Got the Keys”). Before the release of DJ Khaled’s own album “Major Key” on July 29, the streams for those songs were going toward the compilation album. This week, however, they were counted toward “Major Key,” which hit No. 1. (As a result of losing those streams and all song sales, the compilation album dropped to No. 32 from No. 5, having accomplished its goal as a placeholder hit.)

“It did what it was supposed to do,” said Celine Joshua, a senior vice president for commerce at Epic and its parent company, Sony Music Entertainment, who oversaw the project.

“It was born out of a need and a problem,” she said. “I was thinking about our hot roster and the cycles of which content was coming out when, albums that were around the corner and how young fans on these platforms are behaving — consuming in the playlist manner.”

Beginning today, MAJOR KEY will be available exclusively on Apple Music and iTunes before the album’s physical release at retail on Friday, August 5th.

With two bonafide Top 10 hits already under its belt – the RIAA gold “For Free” (featuring Drake), and “I Got the Keys” (featuring Future and JAY Z), MAJOR KEY has just spun off a third single, “Holy Key” (featuring Kendrick Lamar, Big Sean, and Khaled’s fellow Miami legend Betty Wright). The album features appearances by the biggest names in hip-hop, R&B and pop as Khaled, known as the Quincy Jones of hip-hop and R&B has also brought Kanye West, Meghan Trainor, Nas, Rick Ross, J. Khaled kicked off the release of MAJOR KEY with an epic performance yesterday on Good Morning America, and a huge shout-out this morning on Live With Kelly. Khaled also revealed details of a special #FanLuv experience taking place at Apple’s SoHo retail store at 7 pm ET tonight. Khaled will return to New York on Labor Day, September 5th, for a special one-hour takeover of Live With Kelly!, to include a rare DJ set.

Earlier in June, Khaled revealed the MAJOR KEY cover art on ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live! (June 28, 2016 – New York, NY) – Jennifer Hudson has been signed to an exclusive contract with Epic Records, it was announced today by Epic Chairman and CEO LA Reid, following up Ms. Hudson’s historic show-stopping tribute performance of Prince’s “Purple Rain” at the 16th annual BET Awards.

Collaborating as executive producers on Ms. Hudson’s upcoming Epic Records debut will be LA Reid and Clive Davis, Chief Creative Officer, Sony Music Entertainment. This will mark the first time that LA Reid and Clive Davis have collaborated in nearly a quarter-century, since they worked together on Whitney Houston’s all-time best-selling The Bodyguard soundtrack album of 1992. At that time, Mr. Davis was President of Arista Records, and Mr. Reid headed LaFace Records and was a go-to producer with partner Kenny ‘Babyface’ Edmonds.

“Jennifer Hudson is the defining voice of this generation,” said Mr. Reid. “Her award-winning presence on records, in film, and on stage establishes her as one of the premiere artists to emerge in this century. Dressed in a leather jacket, shades, jeans and a bandana around his head, Future Hendrix walked through the smoky stage as flames shot up in the background. The appearance was without bells and whistles—there were no guest artists, or songs other than the one at hand—and Future kept a strictly one-track mind.

Earlier in the night, Future came to the stage to accept the award for Best Group on behalf of himself and Drake for their collaborative album What a Time to Be Alive.
